Indigenize Civil Engineering: A National Initiative

The legacy of civil engineering in Canada is one of profound influence on Indigenous lands and communities. As a discipline intricately tied to land development, water resource management, transportation systems, infrastructure, construction, and resource extraction, civil engineering has played a role in historic harms faced by Indigenous communities. However, this inherent connection to the land also positions civil engineering as a key discipline for reconciliation. In response, the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering (CSCE) launched Indigenize Civil Engineering in 2025 as a national initiative in collaboration with the Council of Heads and Chairs of Civil Engineering Departments, to address existing gaps in integrating Indigenous perspectives within the education of civil engineering. Guided by Indigenous scholars and informed through ongoing engagement with Indigenous Elders, Knowledge Keepers, practitioners, and community members, the initiative aims to foster collaboration among civil engineering educators, practitioners, and Indigenous scholars. Through shared dialogue, knowledge exchange, and the co-creation of a dedicated knowledge hub, seeks to supports the thoughtful integration of Indigenous perspectives into civil engineering education and practice in Canada.
