Glossary of Resource Types

Course (In-person)

A fully developed educational offering delivered face-to-face. This includes traditional structured classes as well as experiential or oral delivery styles – such as taking students to the land or hosting an Elder – that weave Indigenous perspectives into engineering education.

Course (Online)

A virtual educational offering, delivered synchronously or asynchronously, that centers or integrates Indigenous ways of knowing, decolonization practices, or relevant engineering topics.

Book

Published textbooks, monographs, or edited volumes. These may be comprehensive guides, narrative works, or academic texts relevant to civil engineering and Indigenous relations.

Article

White papers, web articles, academic papers, peer-reviewed journal articles, conference proceedings, or shorter published pieces detailing research, methodologies, or case studies on Indigenizing engineering education and practice.

Lesson Plan

A specific module, activity, or classroom guide designed to introduce Indigenous perspectives into a single class session or focused topic within a broader curriculum.

Case Study

In-depth, contextualized analyses of specific engineering projects, community partnerships, or historical events that highlight Indigenous engagement, rights, or traditional knowledge in practice.

Website

Digital toolkits, online databases, portals, or external websites that serve as living repositories of knowledge or practical tools for educators and engineers.

Video

Recorded lectures, documentaries, interviews, speaker series, or multimedia presentations that offer visual and auditory teachings.

Other Resource Types Considered

Institutional Effort

Systemic shifts, strategic initiatives, and administrative actions taken by a university, faculty, or department. Examples include creating a dedicated task force, hiring Indigenous faculty, developing a strategic plan, or instituting cultural shift training for staff.

Historic Site

Physical locations, monuments, or designated areas of significant historical and cultural importance to Indigenous peoples, offering context for land use, infrastructure, and civil engineering impacts.

Other

Strategies, stories, or efforts that do not neatly fit into standard academic categories, honoring the fact that Indigenous knowledge sharing often transcends traditional Western educational structures.
